【椛のお祭り】雑談:留学生生活#2~コンビニ? Life as a Foreign Student in Japan - Convenience Stores (#24)

  1. Butter Bee: Convenience stores in the US are generally gas station stores. Oh, and there are a ton of gas stations in every city, they are almost on every corner, it's so ridiculous, so it's not like there are just a few of them. The idea is that you can fill up your gas tank and grab a bite. It works very well for long travel, when traveling between cities or states for many hours. They do have cold and hot food, as well as cold and hot drinks. Availability of hot food depends on the store though. Out of hot food, you generally can find hot soup, hot sandwiches, hotdogs. They are kept heated, you just come over and grab them yourself, self-service style, select any hotdog bun you want, as much mustard or ketchup you want, etc, and proceed to the checkout to pay for it. Cold food is wrapped in plastic film and stored in open refrigerators, those are generally salads and sandwiches. You can usually find wrapped whole apples too. The drinks are also self-serving, there are several cofee and soda machines you can use, with different add-ons like cream, sugar, sugar substitute sweetener (for diabetics). There is also a selection of differently flavored tea bags and hot water available to brew the tea. Some stores have pastry, like cakes, doughnuts and stuff. There are different kinds of non perisheble snaks available, like potato chips and candy. All food is usually fastfood-y, aside from soups perhaps, you won't find balanced meals like in Japan. Smaller stores have fewer food options than bigger ones and generally don't have hot food and pastries. Aside from food, there might be a shelf with some medecine and misc electronics, like a USB cabel for a phone, USB car charger thingy, etc. All convenience stores have a toilet, it's a must, as you don't want to stop at a gas station and find out that there is no toilet. A store can have a single toilet that is dirty and in a small elevator-sized room, or it can have huge 15-stall toilet rooms for both sexes (so 30 in total) - it all depends on how big the store is. Convenience stores that are accesible off interstate roads tend to be the biggest and the the best ones. The ones deeper in the city tend to be smaller. Some of the bigger convenience stores I have been at had gaming rooms with full blown fighting and ITG (similar to Japanese DDR) arcades, pool tables, etc. though those are rather rare.
